Tribute to Ocean Room, Sydney

We were sad and disappointed to hear that Ocean Room (along with Wildfire) closed abruptly pretty much without warning due to circumstances beyond their control. The cruising business is booming and the boats are getting bigger. The cruise terminal decided to expand and needed more room. From the sound of things, the leases were bought out without warning and immediately. Both places were fantastic spots for dinner or just a drinking hole because it was kind of quiet and opposite to the Opera House.

A recent Business Week article says the Asian market is the next boom market. So much so that a company has decided to switch a fairly new boat from America to China (they used to get older and smaller boats).

We would venture out there often enough and was hoping for a post later this year about it. Sugar hit was also a good time for a dessert on a quiet weeknight. The prices were a little expensive but the portions were pretty big and the quality was outstanding.

These pictures are from last June.

I hope they come back in a different carnation somewhere else but that spot is hard to beat.

Cruise Bar and Yuki on the upper level are still intact so far.

  1. Too bad. I just was introduced to some lovely restaurants in Sydney – very impressed by the ‘food scene’ there. And being near the Opera House was a near-daily occurrence, by choice, while I was in town. Such a wonderful harbor!
